Macbook M4 and Monitor Flicker
By Dale Clutterbuck on on Permalink.
So I recently got a new Macbook Pro M4. Lovely device, with a few weird quirks (sharp vents on the sides and a strange keyboard layout). However I immediately hit issues when using with my monitor (Dell Alienware AW3821DW) at home:
- Vertical lines
- Flickering screen
- Image retention
- Flashing screen (more extreme flickering)
A lot of this seemed to persist once it had occurred... even changing between my Mac and my Windows PC!
I tried a lot of different things:
- HDMI and Display port
- Different cables
- Different adapters (I tried 2 different docks - USB-C, Thunderbolt)
- Different refresh rates
I also found a number of reddit threads where people had similar panel issues and seemed to get replacements from Dell! However, after a load more research I discovered this thread on macrumours.
Within the threads is an explanation around the Temporal Dithering technique used by Macbooks and a couple of tools for disabling dithering. I went with StillColor which seemes to have resolved everything for me.
